SCACTE 2021 Award Winners
New Teacher of the Year: Julia Voyles: Sports Medicine Teacher: Anderson Career and Technology Center
Mrs. Voyles is the new Sports Medicine Teacher and has a background in Athletic training. She has created a state of the art sports medicine lab facility so students can learn and gain hands on practice with the most up-to-date tools and equipment the industry offers. The facility has cardio machines, spine boards, plyometric boxes and much more. With the help of her Advisory Board and local health care providers as well as her local School Board, she has built a sports medicine program that is allowing student to participate in internships for the benefit of their future career goals.

Teacher of the Year: James Ettari- Law Enforcement Instruction: Anderson Career and Technology Center
During his tenure at the ACTC, Mr. Ettari has been one of five instructors who met with the Department of Education to create the first standards based curriculum for Law Enforcement education taking it to a certified course. He was the first high school law enforcement instructor to be certified by the International Academy of Dispatching. He has graduated over 50 students who have continued their path into Law Enforcement, including Military Police, Highway Patrol, County deputies, a SLED liaison, Fire Marshall and a Forensic Scientist.

Teacher Educator: Katrina Haynes: Cyber Academy of SC and Direct Instructor
Mrs. Haynes assists new teachers to identify community partners to become active members of their Advisory Board. In addition, she assists new teachers with building their programs and recruiting students through relationships with guidance counselors and administrators. Katrina models best teaching practices for new teachers to learn classroom management techniques and activities to best engage students. Katrina believes in equipping teachers and teacher leaders with resources and encouraging them to build Professional Learning Communities in order to build support their classroom.

Administrator of the Year: Tim Keown: President, SC Governors School of Agriculture
Mr. Keown has led the charge to develop turn the John De Le Howe Boys School into the Governor’s Commissioned School of Agriculture where students apply the become residents in the only residential agricultural education school in the country. He has taken the facility which was built in the 1800’s to a functioning educational farm for students to apply skills taught in the classroom and transition them into a realistic applied learning environment. His student population has doubled in its first year of existence as is made up of 10th-12th graders in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. He has developed a team of instructors and leaders to develop a rigorous curriculum that includes Honors courses as well as the traditional agricultural classes as well. With his leadership, students have competed in state level competitions and won numerous FFA and 4-H events. Tim is a decorated member of the agricultural education community and is very active in local and state government as well.

Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame: Sherri Yarborough: RD Anderson Applied Technology Center
Mrs. Yarborough is a 36 year veteran devoted to Career and Technical Education by advancing a first class education to the students in her center and students across South Carolina. During her tenure as Director of the RD Anderson Center, she has increased enrollment over 200%. Sherri specializes in meeting the needs of her local industry while balancing CTE Electives offered to her students, allowing them a smooth transition into life after graduation. She received the SC ACTE Administrator of the Year Award and was recognized as a ACTE National Finalist for her outstanding work. She is service oriented as she has served in just about every leadership position in the SC Career and Technical Education Administrators organization in addition to many other offices of leadership throughout the state. She was selected as a Top Ten at the Top for the Economic and Entrepreneurial Vitality group for Upstate SC and has spearheaded the Work Ready Community Initiative for Spartanburg County. For 14 consecutive years, her center has earned the title of Palmetto Gold which is the highest recognition a center can receive. Industry has donated over $350,000 to over 400 students due to her efforts on building relationships for her students. One of her references says this about Mrs. Yarborough: “Sherri is a life changer for her students!”

Jennifer is an administrator who has successfully built a CTE department at a virtual school with several pathways in just a few short years. Jennifer has championed the importance of CTE Courses as an integral part of the IGP planning in order to prepare students to meet the profile of a 21st century South Carolina Graduate. She continues to promote each of the pathways into a virtual and face-to-face experience to meet the needs of virtual students all over South Carolina.
